1,000,000 Books for 1,000,000 Kids!
A Book and a Smile is a book project started by Khloe Joiner, eight years old and a third grade student at Palmer Elementary in Fort Bend ISD in Missouri City, Texas. Her project started after meeting Officer Jessica Berry of the Missouri City Police Department one afternoon. At first she was afraid of her, but after a 'small talk' with her Nana, Billye Moutra, she realized that she had nothing to be afraid of. Khloe decided she wanted to give something to the police officers so that they could give children something special on their runs and maybe this would calm children. She used money she had been saving for a special trip and bought lots of books. She presented the books to Officer Berry and the Missouri City Police Department and she's been on a mission ever since. Khloe has been recognized by The Points of Light, Niagara Water, Baskin-Robbins, Hometown Heroes and other organizations. Her story was even mentioned on the floor of The House of Representatives. She was featured on KHOU-TV Houston, ABC13 Localish, and Good Morning America 3rd Hour. She was also on The Mix 96.5 radio.
A Book and a Smile's mission is to provide children all over the United States with books to help inspire them to do great things in life.
All children, regardless of race, economic status, or capabilities, will have new books in their home library.
