About Khloe Joiner

My name is Khloe Joiner.  I am nine years old and I'm a 4th grade honor roll student.  My favorite subjects are reading, science, Spanish, social studies, and art.  I love soccer, acting classes, auditions, nature, and Roblox.  I especially love helping other people.

I started a project called A Book and a Smile after meeting Missouri City Police Officer Jessica Berry.  I was afraid at first, and I thought that donating books to the police department to give to children would help calm them if they encountered police.  I used money I was saving for a trip to Disneyland to buy my first books. My first donation was over three hundred books.  Since then, I have donated books to other police departments, churches, schools, hospitals, homeless centers, housing developments, adoption agencies, Children's Protective Services, women's centers, and other organizations.  I initiated a classroom library for a 6th grade classroom and books are regularly replaced.  Sometimes I get special requests for sick children, and I make sure that I get their favorite books.

During the pandemic, I was concerned about the closure of schools and libraries.  I wanted to make sure children had access to books, so I organized books drives.  Children were able to receive new books by coming to pick them up from tables placed in front of my home, book popups at area businesses, and in front of schools.  Instead of having a party for my 8th and 9th birthdays, I had book drives.  I love to see the smiles on children's faces when they realize they can get new books for free.

I am honored that I have been recognized by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, Points of Light, Baskin-Robbins, Niagara Hometown Heroes, Hershey Heartwarming Young Heroes, and more.  I am a Top 20 finalist for Time Magazine Kid of the Year.  My hometown gave me a proclamation and June 7, 2021, was Khloe Joiner Day in Missouri City, Texas.  I am also a Jr. Mayor.

My goal is to give 1,000,000 new books to children around the world.  Books help kids develop basic language skills and expand their vocabulary. They can expand our universe beyond time and space and inspire our thoughts. Books introduce us to a world of imagination.  I cannot imagine not having books of my own and I cannot imagine other children not having books.  That is why A Book and a Smile is so important to me.
